Cement Industry Wagons

Major limestone deposits were discovered in the Marulan and Kandos areas of NSW. This led to the development of various vehicles by the NSWGR for the haulage of bulk raw products to processing plants, as well as the movement of finished products to major country and city distributors. The quarry and cement plant owners themselves had many types of vehicle too, to help the haulage of material within their establishments. It is hoped we can cover these vehicles too as available information permits.

Limestone

The first vehicles used to transport limestone were the ever useful, 4-wheel open wagons. These vehicles needed to be tarped to protect their cargo. This necessity was catered for by many conversions of existing vehicles for limestone traffic:

4 Wheel wagons –

UL – Internally modified 1942 RU Wheat Hopper

RH – Roofed Steel LCH’s

PTW – Powder Tank Wagon built on K wagon underframes

Bogie Wagons –

BLH/NHLA-F – 1957 COMENG – Cut down BCH coal hopper – 62 ton

LBH/NPLF – Converted from BCH Coal hoppers

NPHH – CHS Coal hoppers reused in limestone traffic

RHEH – National Rail 92 ton 3-pack Limestone hopper

Clinker

It’s unknown whether any 4-wheel wagons were modified for carrying clinker. Assistance required if possible.

Bogie Wagons –

LRH/NPLF – BRH cement hoppers reused as clinker wagons

LBH/NPLF – FWH Grain hoppers to carry ‘Burnt Lime’

NPEF – NHTF Coal hoppers fitted with a roof for clinker traffic

Cement

There were a few interesting 4-wheel wagon conversions for the transportation of bulk dry cement powder. Here are some:

RH – Converted Steel LCH

PRH – A single, vertically mounted cylindrical tank sitting on a steel LCH underframe

Bogie Wagons –

ARH/NPAF – 1966 A.E Goodwin Experimental Aluminium cement hopper.

ARX/NPAX – 1968 COMENG – Aluminium ‘Inverted Tear Drop’ shape.

BRH/NPBA – Converted BCH coal – Centre walkway, 3 loading hatches (both sides).

FRH/NPBF – Reused FWH Grain hoppers – centre loading hatches

HRH/NPBF – Converted HCH coal – Centre walkway, side loading hatches

PCC/NPCF – 1973 Tulloch – First tank-type Pneumatic discharge wagon (1 cell).

PDF/NPDF – BCSC built? – First 2 cell Pneumatic discharge type (Experimental)

PCT/NPTF – 1970 Tulloch Ltd – 4 Aluminium Sphere’s mounted on Fishbelly underframe.

PRX/NPRX – 1978/81 Mittagong Eng – 76t Aluminium ‘V’ Tank Pneumatic discharge.

PRY/NPRY – as above, but fitted with High-speed bogies. PRX/Y both 2 cell tanks.

NPHH – 100t High-speed Aluminium ‘Funnel Flo’ hopper.

VPBX – Victorian 3-cell cement hoppers
