With the aging fleet of steel clinker wagons taking their toll on operations, it was decided to convert 27 surplus ‘low capacity’ NHTF coal hoppers to replace them (these hoppers became surplus due to the introduction of newer NHHF coal hoppers). The hoppers were fitted with a roof, which has 3 small square hatches and a low set railing around the perimeter. The design of the roof also minimizes dust whilst the train is in transit.
