Origins of the Livery

The railways went through massive changes in the early 1970’s. A big part of the change was the public image of railway rollingstock. The appearance at the time was prominently, well-weathered ‘steam era’ gunmetal grey.

Although several vehicles were painted in a blue colour scheme to promote the opening of the transcontinental rail link, the PTC Teal Blue livery was not adopted until the formation of the ‘Public Transport Commission of NSW’ in 1972. The British railways previously employed the newly appointed commissioner, Phillip Shirley, and it was during his tenure that the NSW railways received a new image. Commissioner Shirley introduced a blue-hued colour scheme similar to a colour scheme that was used on the BR in his time there.

Suburban trains were painted in a lighter blue and white livery, and goods vehicles were painted in a darker blue (teal blue) livery. No Locomotives were painted in a teal livery, although proposed schemes were designed.

The PTC livery was first applied to the KLV/KLY class of louvred vans, which were introduced in early 1973.
