OSF Container Wagon

Brand new OSF at Cardiff Workshops in 1975.                                                Steven Pracy

These wagons were modified underframes from redundant BSV/NSSF sheep wagons. The underframe was lengthened and fitted with fittings for 2 x 20ft ISO containers.

Builders: Cardiff Workshops converted 124 wagons between 1975 and 1979. They were numbered 34801-34924.

Length: 13.72m                                    Tare:    15t                   Capacity: 36t                            Gross: 51t

Bogies: They retained their bogies during the conversion – AQA, ARA.

Coding:

-                     As introduced, they were coded OSF.

-                     In 1980, they were recoded NQSF.

-                     Some were converted to NZMF milk wagons.

Colour Scheme:

-                     As introduced, they were painted PTC Blue all over. Codeboards were white with black writing.

-                     They were repainted SRA red when converted to NZMF wagons.

Further Modifications:

They were modified to carry 1 x 20ft Milk Tank centrally along the deck. One end of the deck was fitted with a walkway for easy access.

Operation:

Originally used for container duties, these wagons were allocated to the movement of cotton from northern NSW to Sydney. As the condition of the available milk tankers deteriorated, these wagons were converted to carry milk tanks and were used extensively in that service mainly on the North Coast line. They remained in this service until 199x, when the milk traffic was lost to road.
