CS 2563 loaded with Fielders LCL tanks at Clyde Yard.

In the 1970’s, the NSWR modified numerous wagon underframes to carry containers. The CS was converted from S truck underframes. They had a timber deck with container corner lugs which could hold a LCL container or any other item with a base size of 7’ x 8’ (2.11 x 2.44m).

Running Numbers:  4 were converted, but only 2 numbers are known - 16326, 16328.

Length: 00.0 (18ft)                 Tare: 00t           Capacity: 00t Gross: 00t                    Eqil Length: 1

Coding:

-                      They only ever coded CS, and did not receive a 4-letter ROA code.

Colour Scheme:

-                      Painted in standard NSWR gunmetal grey all over with white lettering.

Operation:

Railway customers like ‘Fielders’ were using small tank containers to move their starch and glucose products. Combined with their ability to hold LCL containers, these vehicles were convenient for these small consignments that would allow the contents of the tanks/containers to be emptied without removing them off the wagon.

Modifications:

-           No modifications appear to have been made to these wagons. A unique feature of the wagon was that both codeboards were fitted to the ‘A’ end of the wagon sidesills.

Modelling in HO:

-                      Sydney Hobbies produce a kit of the CS and is available from Casula Hobbies. The kit was reviewed in the August 2004 AMRM.
